The Great Barrier Reef
(World Atlas)by Ted
The Great Barrier Reef is made up of more than 1 million corral polyps. It is located off the Northeastern coast of Australia (Rector). Many animals live there like the clownfish and the sea anemone. The Great Barrier Reef has lots of animals, the algae is very important, and it is very big.
The best thing about the Great Barrier Reef is that it is home to many animals. There are many species of animals and plants in the Great Barrier Reef. There are 200 species of seabirds and shorebirds, 450 species of hard coral, 150 species of soft coral, 500 species of seaweed, and 2,600 plant species (Rector). So that means there are 3,900 types of life at the Great Barrier Reef. Some of the special animals that live there are the dugong, giant clams, blue-ringed octopus, cone shell sea snails, manatees, sea cucumbers, and blue sea stars (Franchino & Rector). The manatees are my favorite because they swim in herds. There are also fish, whales, crocodiles, dolphins, sea turtles, jellyfish, algae, clown fish, anemones, reptiles, plankton, and mangrove trees (Rector). On islands next to the coral reef there are fruit bats, koalas, water rats, and wallabies (Rector). My favorite animal is the koala because it is cute. These are all the animals that live in the Great Barrier Reef.
Even though the Great Barrier Reef has lots of animals, the algae is the most important. Algae is the most important because algae is the glue that holds the reef together. The coral also eats the algae (Franchino). Algae is important because it feeds the coral and it makes the coral healthy. “There are over 400 species of marine algae growing in the Great Barrier Reef” (Ponnamperuma). This shows why the algae is so important to the Great Barrier Reef.
The Great Barrier Reef is special because it is humongous. In fact, the reef is 1,429 miles long, has an area of 134,634 miles², and is 1.2 miles deep (Rector). The Great Barrier Reef has grown for thousands of years so it is humongous. There are no other reefs bigger than the Great Barrier Reef. “It is the world’s largest reef!” (Great Barrier Reef) I think it is exciting that “Astronauts can even see the reef from space” (Rector). This shows that the Great Barrier Reef is humongous.
The Great Barrier Reef is a special landform because it is home to a large quantity of animals, the algae help it survive, and it is humongous. I think people should take care of the Great Barrier Reef because it is “bigger than the United Kingdom, Switzerland and Holland combined” and it is very amazing to see it.
